The IOC of UNESCO proposed to the United Nations to proclaim in 2021–2030 an international Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. This article presents motivations for the Decade, gives background information and describes goals, anticipated societal outcomes, main areas of research and development, and the approach to use them in achieving societal outcomes.
